We thought we’d put together a little guide for the Top 5 Autumn/ Winter Trends that you need to know about for 2022. Whether you like to stay on trend or not, it’s always interesting to see what’s hot in the fashion world. Let’s see what’s in fashion and what’s coming BACK, as it’s needless to say that not all the trends are new to the scene for this Autumn/ Winter! With what’s been seen on this year’s runways to what’s already being seen on the high-street, here are the trends we think we’ll be seeing a lot more of for the rest of the season!
Y2K Is Here to Stay
Now for some people, the idea of low waisted jeans coming back into fashion is an absolute nightmare, however, whether we like it or not, Y2K trends aren’t going anywhere anytime soon!
So what is Y2K fashion apart from low waisted jeans? The Y2K look is inspired by the late 90s to early 00s and was defined by women in pop culture at the time. So think Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Missy Elliot and Paris Hilton - these women and their 90s wardrobe are pretty much walking examples of what Y2K fashion is. So along with everything being low waisted, we also have hot pinks, tiny bags, diamantes and double-denim. The highly popular program “Euphoria”, known for its characters’ wardrobes, is said to have played a big part in this fashion trend making a resurgence.
Though it may not be to everyone’s taste, we do think this is going to be a really fun trend for those who love it to re-create and it will be amazing to see how people incorporate it in their modern-day wardrobes and mix it with other current trends!
Biker Style is Back
For some, the biker style is less of a fashion statement and more of a way of life, if you’re a biker of course.
However, this year’s runways are seeing an influx in leathers being introduced to mainstream fashion and integrated into other styles. It’s been said that searchers for secondhand versions of such biker jackets have spiked over the past few months. In regards to jackets, you have the biker jacket, the moto jacket and the bomber jacket. These leather jackets are being seen to be paired with otherwise very delicate and pretty outfits or completely the opposite, with motor cross style leather skirts and trousers.
Two very different styles coming from the same type of trends! So in terms of the biker jacket, it’s very open to your interpretation on how you want to style them, and however you do it, you’ll be on trend!
Oversized, But More
Oversized and androgynous tailoring in clothes has been around for a while now, but it is only becoming more prevalent in mainstream fashion. Up until now, oversized silhouettes have been balanced out with slimmer fitting items, for example, wearing an oversized blazer with cycling shorts.
Going forward we are going to see an even more dedicated approach to the oversized look, with head-to-toe oversized suits. This look again comes from women in the 90s making statements by wearing oversized and androgynous looks. People are also saying this style is part of a workwear comeback post-pandemic now that people are back in office. People are adapting their formal work attire to be more comfy and casual for everyday wear.
Bomber Jackets are going to be “the Bomb” this A/W
If there was one thing that people took away from this year’s runways, it’s that bomber jackets are going to be huge this year.
Different designers each showed their take on this classic piece, from simple black flight style jackets, to suede, oversized yet cropped ones. Bomber jackets are going to be the jacket to have this A/W, though they seem to gain popularity each year with searches for “bomber jackets” spiking around November every year.
The difference in this trend this year is that these jackets are forecast to be worn over “fancier” items, such as over lacey garments or tailored suits.
The Grungier The Better
The grunge style never truly goes out of fashion, but bright and garish have dominated mainstream fashion for the past few years, and we’re starting to see more designers going for all-black ensembles with gothic accents such as fishnets and sheer fabrics layered with chunky jewellery and band-style t-shirts. A more dominatrix-style is going to become easier to access with the high-street being influenced by runway looks featuring over-the-knee boots, mini skirts, leather trousers and elongated blazers.
The modern twist on this grungy style will be seen as a bit more simplistic as to what’s known as traditionally grunge fashion, with the main theme being fully monochromatic looks.
The main thing to note about all the 2022 A/W trends mentioned above, is that they’re open to interpretation and actually allow for a lot of cross-over between each other. As second-hand, slow fashion enthusiasts, sometimes chasing trends isn’t always what we like to promote, but this year’s trends show an acceptance of using items from the past along with integrating a more comfortable and diverse way of dressing. Plus, so many of the items mentioned are going to be way cooler if you shop for second-hand and even vintage versions, so we think these trends are going to even further encourage people to shop in a more economical and sustainable way!
