Thrifty Halloween Costumes

We thought we’d make Halloween a little easier for you this year by coming up with THREE super simple costume ideas! These costumes are made up of three key items each, some of which you probably already have in your wardrobe. These pieces are also things that you could wear day-to-day, making any parts of the costume you do have to purchase much better value for money and WAY more sustainable, because there really is no need to be spending money on something you’re going to wear for one day of the year! We have also gone for classic decade inspired looks, which only seemed right as we LOVE our vintage clothes here at GO THRIFT.

LOOK 1: 50s High School Girl

First up is this super cute 50s High School Girl costume. We definitely took inspiration from Sandy from the film “Grease” for this one!

All you need is some form of collared blouse (the frillier the collar the better), a little button-up cardigan and any type of mid-length skirt. When it comes to the skirt, make sure to go for a style that you know you’ll be able to slot into your everyday wardrobe and wear again, as long as it’s mid length it will probably work, whether it’s more of a pencil skirt, a pleated skirt or a full on 50s style swing skirt! Pair this outfit with some little white socks, some canvas-style trainers and a 50s hair style and you’re good to go!

Costume Checklist:

  • Collared Blouse
  • Button-Up Cardigan
  • Midi Skirt

LOOK 2: 70s Hippie

Next up, probably the most fun look, the 70s Hippie. All the pieces in this outfit can so easily be integrated into your everyday wardrobe as they are all part of trends that have come back into fashion! We took inspiration for this look from no other than 70s style icon, Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac.

For this outfit you will need a patterned shirt (for the most 70s vibe look a floral or paisley shirt will work best, but pretty much any funky patterned shirt will do), a pair of flared jeans or trousers and a suede or corduroy jacket. There is lots of wriggle room when picking all these pieces, as long as the colour scheme throughout all three pieces is roughly the same anything will work! Hair and makeup is definitely key for making this outfit look authentic, and if you can get your hands on a pair of platform heels or boots, you’re really onto a winner for looking like a real 70s king or queen!

Costume Checklist:

  • Patterned Shirt
  • Flared Jeans or Trousers
  • Suede or Corduroy Jacket

LOOK 3: 80s College Jock

Our 80s College Jock look is definitely THE most wearable outfit when it comes to wearing the pieces on a day-to-day basis once Halloween is over. Plus you’ll probably already have two of these pieces in your wardrobe! It’s also a really good excuse to invest in a super cool varsity jacket if you don’t already have one.

All you’re going to need is a basic tee, a pair of blue jeans (a pair of Levi’s 501s will look the most authentic, but if you already have a pair of blue jeans there’s no need to buy another pair!) and a varsity jacket! Pair these items with pretty much any pair of trainers and you’re set. Super comfy, super easy and super diverse for wearing day-to-day! Shout out to Andrew Clark from the classic 80s film The Breakfast Club for inspiring this outfit. If you’re wanting to do a group costume effort, dressing up as all the main characters from The Breakfast Club would look so cool and all the outfits are super easy to recreate!

Costume Checklist:

  • Basic Tee
  • Blue Jeans
  • Varsity Jacket
