The Rise of Double Denim

The Rise of Double Denim

Double denim is one of those looks that’s just never going to go out of style. It’s not for everyone, but those who do wear it with confidence absolutely rock it! Let’s deep dive into the history behind this iconic look and see where it all began…

Iconic Stars to Iconic Look

When you think of double denim, you usually think of the 70s, however, this timeless trend actually dates back to the 50s. Famous singer and actor of the time, Bing Crosby, coined the term “Canadian Tuxedo” for his fully denim outfit, which actually got him denied entry into a hotel in 1951 for not conforming to the dress code. This out-there look was then adopted by two of the biggest names of the 50s: Marilyn Monroe and Elvis Presly! This of course had a massive impact on the popularity of double denim, as both of these figures had massive fan bases and were highly influential when it came to their fashion.

Carrying the Trend

Although it’s fair to say that double-denim has never been fully accepted by mainstream fashion, it always finds a way to come back through being fashioned by celebs. Debbie Harry, lead singer of Blondie, gave double denim a revival 1978 with an onstage appearance wearing an outfit made of different shades of denim. As she was already looked upon as a punk-rock style icon, her wearing double denim made room for more acceptance to this controversial pairing. Drew Barrymore also brought double denim back to the limelight in 1991 with a real 90s androgynous twist as she wore an oversized denim jacket and some distressed jeans

So, is double denim allowed?

Even though this is a style that has clearly been accepted and worn by some of the biggest style icons throughout history, if you search “double denim” in Google, you’ll still find that one of the top questions is “Is double denim ok?”. It may be that double denim is never fully accepted by everyone, but what fashion trend is? It must be said though that in recent years, the fashion industry and designers have HAD to accept and come through with the double denim looks. Fendi, Tom Ford and Miu Miu, to name a few, have been sending some of the world’s most famous models down their runways in double denim looks. Plus, celebs are still to this day being photographed in this effortless and timeless look! It’s definitely becoming less of a statement and controversy for people to wear a fully denim look on a day-to-day basis.
